BACKGROUND:

father marcus keane comes from a regular earth whose people sometimes have the misfortune of incurring a bad case of demonic possession. people who are possessed by demons might find themselves lucky for awhile: the demon might promise and then grant them material wealth, stroke their egos, occasionally provide supernatural assists in otherwise mundane situations. but after awhile, the possessed begin exhibit unusual symptoms: speaking in voices that aren’t their own, losing control of their actions. they find themselves inclined to hurt people or be cruel to others. they attract paranormal phenomenon, too; animals drive themselves into harm around the possessed, and sometimes swarms of insects will gather and nest in unusual places around the possessed. and then, at the culmination of this experience, a possessed person will incur the swift and sometimes fatal deterioration of their physical body as the demon tries to ensnare their immortal soul. the catholic church will formally approve exorcisms as its institutions deem fit, and in fact there are some priests who treat this work as a lifelong mission. marcus keane is one of those priests.

when he was a boy living in leicestershire, marcus watched his father brutally murder his mother in front of him. he was put in a boy’s home for a brief period of time before he was sold to the roman catholic church, as part of a cohort of young boys who are put through a grueling ordeal to eventually become career exorcists. marcus emerged extremely skilled at the task. described as a “knight templar” by the show synopses, before the start of the show proper he’s known in satan-adoring circles as a fearsome and peerless exorcist, traveling the world to rid innocent souls of demonic possession. “i was the gun,” he says of this time, “and the church was the hand, and the words were true.”

that was before mexico city, when he fails to save a young boy. the possession kills him, ending marcus’ lifelong “winning streak” and sending him spiraling into doubt about his capabilities and whether or not god still works through him. the experience is a traumatic one. marcus ends up taking a long sabbatical, which he spends in isolation at st. aquinas’, a place for “broken priests”. a year and a half passes as marcus loses himself in his grief, guilt, and anger. then father tomás ortega finds him, having heard of his reputation and seeking his help with a new case of demonic possession: one that has befallen an upper-middle-class family in chicago, specifically their youngest daughter casey.

as of his canon point, through helping tomás and the rances he’s undergoing the long process of finally healing from his failure in mexico city. he’s been excommunicated, but he knows now that he doesn’t need formal sanction from the roman catholic church to do what he does best--coerce and compel the devil out of people. he still has unfinished business in chicago, and he’ll stop at nothing to keep the forces of darkness at bay.

INCENTIVE: marcus wants to undo his great failure in mexico city with the resurrection of the boy gabriel. it’s a somber wish to walk back his greatest regret.

FIT: marcus is easily a tactile person around people with whom he feels comfortable, and despite his big mclargehuge adherence to his faith, his commitment to his “sobriety, poverty, chastity” vows isn’t particularly strict. marcus is down to date and hook up, however sparingly, and while he’s faintly unaccustomed to emotional attachments due to the nature of his work, he’s also not strictly opposed to them when they happen organically. in eudio in pursuit of his incentive he’s likely to make friendly acquaintances readily and hook up not infrequently. he’s not a bad date and makes for interesting company, unless you are tomás, in which case he is mostly kind of a dick.

CONSENT: consent in sexual affairs is Very Important to marcus and he will accept no substitutes. consent in all matters, really, since most of demon possession is coercion, and marcus ain’t about that SHIT.

with that said he has broken into people’s homes, and pointed a gun at someone, and physically threatens people sometimes. but in eudio he will be a good boy, since there are no demons he needs to sermon punch, or whatever. it’s all for the greater good!!!
